Bringing in Family to Combat Anorexia
Unlike traditional treatments for anorexia nervosa in adolescents, in which the patient sees the therapist one on one, this kind of family-based treatment encourages parents to play a pivotal role in restoring their child’s weight while trying to avoid hospitalizations.
When Patients Don’t Fill Their Prescriptions
But medication nonadherence exists. And in good measure and with significant costs. In one study, as many as half of all patients did not follow their doctors’ advice when it came to medications. Other studies have shown that patients who were nonadherent with medications for chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure were likely to be sicker, suffer from more complications and have higher mortality rates. The overall cost of medication nonadherence? More than $170 billion annually in the United States alone.

Red-yeast cholesterol fighters can be worthless
A little more than a decade ago, a federal court ruled that over-the-counter red-yeast rice products were not drugs — despite the fact that these products contained naturally occurring chemicals that were functionally indistinguishable from lovastatin, a cholesterol-lowering prescription drug. And so a major dietary supplement industry was born. By 2008, Americans were spending $20 million a year on red-yeast rice products, many on their doctor’s recommendation (and perhaps even via their doctor’s offices).
But a new study warns that not all red-yeast rice products contain pharmacologically active concentrations of the fungal products. As such, its authors caution: “Buyer Beware!”
