Hope Street Pharmacy, a small regional firm is expert in the process of dosing, packaging, compounding and educating. Pharmacist Diane Corba spoke with us on a number of subjects and brings to light this very important and often misunderstood role in a very complex healthy care delivery system.

What is a Aging Disability Resource Center? — Changes to Medicare Part D Perscription Drug Plans 10-16-11

An Aging Disability Resource Center, contrary to the name is not a place but is a resource that exists under the banner of the Area Agency on Aging around the US. It is designed as a one stop location for seniors and their families to get information and access to services that enable seniors to remain independent in their own. According to the Administration on Aging – ” The Aging and Disability Resource Center Program (ADRC), a collaborative effort of AoA and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is designed to streamline access to long-term care. The ADRC program provides states with an opportunity to effectively integrate the full range of long-term supports and services into a single, coordinated system. By simplifying access to long-term care systems, ADRCs and other single point of entry (SEP) systems are serving as the cornerstone for long-term care reform in many states.”

Techno Stress – Maud Purcell

Fight or flight is in all of us and serves a very useful purpose when it kicks in at the right time. What happens when it kicks in and doesn’t stop?

Techno Stress is a term that best describes the way we seem to living our lives today. Rather than being the masters of our machines and devices, too often we become their slaves.

There are techniques to help manage this dilemia, like better time management. But what happens when you are not the one in control? With insatiable appetiatate for instant information and response, we put often undue pressure on ourselves and others to the point that it will and does effect our health.

Maud Purcell deals with these issues daily in her practice as a psychotherapist and Maud Purcell MSW, LCSW, CEAP is the Executive Director of The Life Solution Center of Darien, CT.

Her approach is short-term and solution-focused. She recognizes that most dilemmas have straightforward, common-sense solutions. Maud weaves a unique blend of warmth and humor into her work.

She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Trinity College (Hartford, CT). She completed her graduate studies at the University of South Carolina (Summa cum Laude), where she was selected Outstanding Micro Practice Student and was inducted into Alpha Delta Mu, the National Honor Society for her discipline. 03/13/11

Can Exercise Keep You Young?

Can Exercise Keep You Young?
Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky, a professor of pediatrics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, was startled to discover that exercise kept a strain of mice from becoming gray prematurely.
…. heartening new research published last week in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, exercise reduced or eliminated almost every detrimental effect of aging in mice that had been genetically programmed to grow old at an accelerated pace.

Bringing in Family to Combat Anorexia
Unlike traditional treatments for anorexia nervosa in adolescents, in which the patient sees the therapist one on one, this kind of family-based treatment encourages parents to play a pivotal role in restoring their child’s weight while trying to avoid hospitalizations.

When Patients Don’t Fill Their Prescriptions
But medication nonadherence exists. And in good measure and with significant costs. In one study, as many as half of all patients did not follow their doctors’ advice when it came to medications. Other studies have shown that patients who were nonadherent with medications for chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure were likely to be sicker, suffer from more complications and have higher mortality rates. The overall cost of medication nonadherence? More than $170 billion annually in the United States alone.
