The enactment of the recent health reform act may be the just the catalyst needed to move Americans in the direction of taking personal responsibility for wellness. While it seems that Washington may have just discovered this approach to better utilization of health care services, hospitals like Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut, long ago realized this and launched very successful programs. Working with individuals and corporate employers in the area, they have helped to bring health awareness and proactive health care to a group of people not previously in the system. Donna Guadisio Zeale, Director of the Center for Healthy Living discusses their approach and plans for the future.

Proposed Tax on Sugary Beverages Debated : The debate over a tax on sugary soft drinks — billed as a way to fight obesity and provide billions for health care reform — is starting to fizz over. Social Snacking Next to a Size Zero: It is well established that we look to others for cues about how much food to eat. Break bread with a glutton, and you’ll most likely eat a big portion too. But a paper soon to be published in the Journal of Consumer Research explores the way that these choices are affected by the body type of the other person eating.

With the number of the uninsured having risen to 48 million Americans, clearly the need for reform is dire. But President Obama made no mention of who exactly will take care of these patients, even if they get insurance under a successful health reform initiative. Since that state’s universal coverage law took effect in 2006, its health care system has been inundated with almost half a million new patients. The demand for medical services has rapidly outpaced the supply of care physicians able to provide care.
